These links provide access to case law from Minnesota, the Federal courts,
and other states. Please be aware of several difficulties performing case
law research on the Internet. First, not all cases are available.
Web sites are great for finding recent cases, but many sites include only
selected cases or have an archive going back only a few years. Second,
there is no way to search multiple states at the same time. Each state
posts its own state opinions. There is no free search engine like Lexis or
Westlaw to search multi-states. Third, it can be difficult finding a case
if you have a citation that is not used on the Internet (for example 300 N.W.2d
1). Some Web sites allow keyword searching of cases. On other sites
it is helpful to know party names, decision dates, and docket numbers.
If you have difficulty finding a particular case, or would like to perform a
more comprehensive search, please come to the law library. At the library
you have free access to cases in books and on electronic
resources such as Westlaw and Lexis.
